Factors Internal to News Production

Political journalism may be conceived as fulfilling a ‘dual role’. First, journalists are mediators of political information from external sources. Their actions shape the information flows that are of crucial importance to polities, which rely on free flowing information as a basis for democratic legitimisation, responsiveness, accountability and participation. Secondly, journalists are actors in their own right, who contribute to processes of opinion-formation by political commentary.8 Here we look at these two aspects for European journalism: first, by assessing journalists’ experiences of news reporting; and second, by examining ‘who’ they attempt to influence through opinion-leading. Since this raises important normative questions over what constitutes an adequate provision of political information for European governance, finally, we inquire into journalists’ evaluations of their role and ‘media performance’.
